A Fundamental Rights (FR) petition has been filed with the Supreme Court seeking an order that the fundamental human rights have been violated through the decision by the respondents including former President Ranil Wickremesinghe to issue liquor licenses in violation of the Excise Act after the 2024 Presidential Election was announced. 
The ceremonial opening of the first session of the Tenth Parliament is scheduled for today (21), during which President Anura Kumara Dissanayake will present the Government s Policy Statement. 
The Court of Appeal has upheld the death sentence given to Geeganagamage Amarasiri alias Julampitiye Amare who was accused of shooting and killing of two persons at a JVP rally in June 2012.
