At least 85 people died of suspected heat stress and related issues in Odisha, Bihar, Jharkhand, Rajasthan and Uttar Pradesh in 24 hours, senior officials in these regions said on Friday, amid an unforgiving heat spell in India that has pushed temperatures to unprecedented levels in many of these regions. 
A passenger who attempted to smuggle undeclared gemstones worth around Rs. 08 million out fo the country has been arrested by officers of the Sri Lanka Customs Narcotics Control Unit at the departure terminal of Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) in Katunayake. 
The Welipenna Interchange of the Southern Expressway has been closed until further notice due to a section of the road being flooded, the Director of the Road Development Authority (RDA) said. 
The Meteorology Department says showers or thundershowers will occur at times in Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern provinces. Several spells of showers may occur in North-western province.
